Dharmshala, also spelled Dharamsala, town, in western Himachal Pradesh state, northwestern India. The Gurkhas referred to Dharamshala as ‘Bhagsu’ and referred to themselves as Bhagsuwalas. “Dharamsala” literally means “a spiritual dwelling” and in loose translation a shelter or rest house for pilgrims and travelers.
What I know for sure is that it is based on the Bhagsunag situated at Mcleod Ganj than Gurkhas referring to it as Bhagsu. Bhagsunath Temple is one of the holiest places in Dharamshala / McLeod Ganj and that’s what is the reason for the place being called Bhagsu in olden times.
